HISTORY
Yes, Virginia, there once was an actual “Ebell Rest Cottage.” From 1917 to the mid-1920s it was a modest home near the Los Angeles Airport, to which Ebell women traversed regularly, over dirt roads, in order to provide a space for needy women convalescents to stay for a few weeks before returning to their homes. In the 20s, Ebell women sold the original Rest Cottage and raised additional money to purchase two lots at 135 N. Park View, on which a new Rest Cottage was subsequently built. After paying cash for the second Rest Cottage, surplus funds were placed in a Rest
Cottage endowment fund.

Ebell women worked tirelessly at this second Rest Cottage for fifty years, but in 1979 made the difficult decision to sell it, as Medicare and other insurance programs began to provide the help needed and Ebell women recognized the increasing possibility of legal liability for their enterprise. When the second Rest Cottage was sold, in 1980, the proceeds were added to the original endowment fund and the Rest Cottage Association was formed to support other organizations that help women in need.

As a result of prudent investing, good markets outnumbering bad, and generous donations that continued to be added to the endowment by Ebell members and friends, the endowment peaked at $4 million a few years ago. We have continued to donate the interest from the endowment (which in recent years has ranged from approximately $150,000 to $200,000) to organizations in the Los Angeles area that help women in need, still honoring the original purposes of the original
Rest Cottage.
